Signs of bad brakes

Here are the most common warning signs—if you notice any of these, it’s a good idea to get your brakes checked soon.

1) Squealing or squeaking noise

• Often caused by brake pad wear—many pads have a wear indicator that starts making noise.

2) Grinding, growling, or metal-on-metal noise

• This is a serious warning: the pad material is worn down and the rotor may be getting scratched.

• Stop driving if the noise is strong or braking feels unsafe.

3) Brake warning light on the dashboard

• Could indicate low brake fluid, an ABS issue, or other brake system problems.

4) Longer stopping distance

• If you press the pedal and your car doesn’t slow as quickly as usual, braking performance may be reduced.

5) Brake pedal feels soft, spongy, or goes closer to the floor

• Often a sign of air in the brake lines or low/contaminated brake fluid.

• Could also point to a hydraulic issue.

6) Brake pedal pulses or the steering wheel shakes when braking

• Common causes include warped rotors or uneven rotor wear.

7) Vibration when driving (especially under braking)

• Similar to rotor issues; sometimes lug/rotor mounting issues too.

8) Pulling to one side when you brake

• Possible causes:

  • Uneven brake pad/rotor wear

  • A sticking caliper

  • Brake fluid or hydraulic imbalance

9) Burning smell or smoke (especially after short driving)

• Can happen if brakes are dragging (stuck caliper/parking brake issue) or excessive heat.

10) Reduced braking power or “uneven” braking feel

• If braking feels inconsistent (grabs, releases, or suddenly changes), don’t ignore it.

11) ABS light or ABS kicking in at low speeds

• ABS issues may cause unusual behavior during hard braking.
